Meditation with the intent on receiving special powers is the egos way to sneak back in on you with the hope that you won’t notice it.
It doesn’t matter what form the ego takes it wants to be noticed, acknowledged and better than someone else. This is a common pitfall in spirituality and often very common in early practice.
There will be experiences for sure from long term meditation practices. The difficult thing will be to not attach to those. This is not the purpose of meditation. The purpose is for you to begin to know yourself. To be come reacquainted with all areas, even the ones you do not like and have denied
Don’t waste your energy on waiting for some kind of super powers as a reward for your time spent meditating. The rewards will come in ways you can never possibly expect. The changes in you will be steady and slow and often times not even noticeable. Then a year or two or three you will remember back to who you were before you started and you will feel very happy with the changes that have naturally occurred in you. This is what is meant by loving yourself. As you gradually uncover and allow even the darkest parts of yourself to be seen, the understanding that you gain will help them fall away.
Everything that we experience forms who we are and how we interact in the world. As we uncover those experiences and look deeper into them we begin to see why we react the way we do. No longer do we judge or condemn ourselves because now we see that these experiences are not who we are at all. Once this happens we can start to have compassion for ourselves and dissolve the belief that we are bad. No one is bad, everyone is just unaware. Developing this self awareness unlocks our ability to let go and not attach to anything we have done in the past and also avoid similar things in the future.
Your work in meditation will be to look deep inside of yourself and acknowledge the things that you do that are in a sense holding you back from becoming who you really are. Examples would be, repeated behaviors that you use to feel accepted or to get something you want. In a book I read, Heal Yourself Heal the World, she had a very profound realization. Her whole life she had used a tactic when interacting with men that was manipulating them. This aspect had remained hidden from her all her life because she wasn’t able to accept the part of her that did it. The realization came and with it the reason that it was created. She had been molested by her father and had developed a personality trait that she used when interacting with men. Once she was able to see why she created it she began to feel compassion to herself and was able to let go of it. This is the basis of self love, the understanding that everything is for a reason and when we uncover the reason, we not longer need it to protect us. The realization is then born in you that everything you do was to protect yourself from various life experiences that have hurt you in the past.
So meditation is not for experiences, it is for healing. For more information on these topics check out my website at www.yourpainismypain.com.
